Our training schedule is highly flexible, allowing members to participate as often as they like based on their own availability. Crews typically have multiple training sessions each week, and members are welcome to join as many or as few sessions as they can fit in. Whether you’re looking to train regularly for competitive events or simply join for occasional sessions, our program adapts to your needs, making it easy to find a balance that works for you.
We offer both evening and weekend sessions to accommodate different schedules. During the summer, evening rows are particularly popular, as the longer daylight hours and warm weather make for beautiful, scenic outings on the River Cam. In the winter months, we continue evening sessions with safety lights, creating a different experience!
No experience is required! See the Learn-to-Row page here for details on how to start. After completing Learn to Row, you’ll be ready to join our Novice Crew and continue developing your skills.
We welcome experienced rowers of all backgrounds! Once you get in touch, we’ll discuss your rowing experience, goals, and availability to help you find the best fit. We have several crews suited to different skill levels, from our Novice Crew to our Competitive Crew for those interested in racing. You’ll also have access to small boats like single sculls and double sculls. The first session is free, and will give you a chance to try out and meet some of the members of the club.
Sweep rowing is the variation where each rower has one oar and grips the handle with both hands. Sculling is the variation where each rower has two oars, and grips with a handle in each of their left and right hand.
Beginners generally start with sweep rowing as that is the practical way to start as a group, but you will get the chance to learn both styles if you want to do that. After some tries at all the different boat classes and styles, you might develop a preference.
Yes! Coxswains play a vital role in our crews, and we’re always looking for both experienced and beginner coxes to join us. As a coxswain, you’ll learn to guide and lead crews in training sessions and races on the River Cam. If you’re new to coxing, we’ll provide training to get you comfortable with the responsibilities. Coxing is a great way to be involved in rowing in Cambridge, and we’re happy to welcome you to the team!
Our boats are stored at Old CRA Boathouse and New CRA Boathouse. See maps here.
X-Press Boat Club participates in various events and races on the River Cam and beyond. Our Competitive and Masters Crews regularly compete in local and national regattas, and our club also organizes social outings and training camps . Some of our rowers participate in overseas events, giving them a chance to experience rowing in new locations. See the full calendar of races and social events here.
Absolutely! At X-Press Boat Club, we believe rowing is as much about community as it is about sport. After many of our morning rowing outings we head to local cafes for a well-deserved coffee and breakfast—a great chance to unwind and catch up with fellow rowers off the water. The local pubs are also a staple for a post outing pint in the evenings, especially to warm back up in the winter!
We also host several larger events throughout the year, including a festive Christmas party to celebrate the holiday season together, and a lively summer party where members, family, and friends come together for food, drinks, and fun by the river. These social gatherings are fantastic opportunities to connect with others in the club, build friendships, and enjoy the vibrant Cambridge rowing community. Whether you’re new to rowing or a seasoned member, there’s always a warm welcome and plenty of chances to join in on the fun!
