We organize our club into squads, with crews grouped by experience level and age. In practice, there’s a lot of overlap between crews, giving members plenty of chances to train with rowers at different skill levels—a great way to learn and improve by rowing with more experienced teammates. Crews train at various times, so you’ll almost always find an X-Press boat on the water each day.
Our members are primarily people balancing family and work commitments, so most training sessions are scheduled outside regular working hours on the River Cam. Members usually connect with one or two main crews but are free to train as frequently or as occasionally as they like, allowing everyone to tailor participation to their availability and fitness goals.
The men's and ladies first VIII trains and competes at a high level. In eights, the main aim of the season’s racing is the Cambridge Town Bumps, where they are currently well placed in the top divisions. The crews also races in regattas on and off the Cam, and usually competes at the National Masters’ Championships and the Head of the River Races on the Thames.
Masters rowing is for rowers aged 27 and above, who train and compete in age group competitions. Our active community of masters rowers train and compete all year round. We currently have four active squads of masters rowers from age range 27 to 70+. You will be able to find a crew to match your experience, fitness level, and rowing goals.
The Novice Crew is the next step for rowers who have just completed the Learn to Row course and are ready to build on their foundational skills. This crew focuses on refining the basics, improving timing and rhythm, and getting comfortable rowing longer distances.
Rowers in our Novice Crews benefit from regular coaching, helping each person progress at their own pace while also learning the essentials of team rowing. You’ll have the opportunity to meet other new rowers, take part in club activities, and eventually—if you’re interested—prepare for friendly club races and events.
We have a learn to row group for new members to the club who have never previously rowed. See the 'Learn to Row' page for details.
We have a squad of rowers who train together in combinations of doubles, pairs and singles; either for pure fun, or for winning regattas.
Once you are at a competent level, small boat rowers (single scullers, double sculls, pair rowers) can book out boats and row on their own at any time - others prefer to join up and row together as a flotilla.
We offer corporate membership options for companies looking to establish their own crew - for fun outings or for races. We have, in previous Town Bump races, had entries from ARM, Raspberry Pi, Cambridge Consultants, and The University Geology Department.
We can supply equipment, coaching and other support depending on your needs. Contact us for options and further details.
