Learning to row is not only a fantastic way to improve fitness, but it’s also a great opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the unique experience of rowing along Cambridge’s beautiful waterways.
With X-Press Boat Club, you’ll learn to row with a community of friendly, supportive beginners and experienced rowers. Our program ensures you build solid skills, practice water safety, and become part of a welcoming rowing club right from day one.
At the end of the program you will know the fundamentals of rowing - you then have the chance to join the club and join up with one of our novice or masters crews.
Our Learn to Row program runs in small group sessions.
Each session lasts around 90 minutes to 2 hours (usually with a cafe trip afterwards), giving you ample time to learn the essentials, practice on the water, and get comfortable with the rhythm of rowing. During each session, you’ll receive hands-on guidance, starting with basic rowing drills on land before moving to the river. Expect a mix of technical instruction, teamwork exercises, and gentle fitness building as you progress. All equipment is provided, and each session will build on the last, ensuring steady improvement and confidence in the boat.
Rowers are welcome to attend as many sessions as they wish, with no requirement to attend every session.
The learn to row course lasts three months. You’ll progress from complete beginner to a competent novice, ready to join a crew and continue your rowing journey in Cambridge. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
In the first week, you’ll meet your coaches and fellow rowers and get a comprehensive introduction to rowing basics. We’ll cover:
The anatomy of the rowing boat and oars
Basic rowing terminology
Safety guidelines for rowing on the River Cam
An introduction to the rowing stroke on the rowing machine (ergo)
The first few sessions are likely to be in a small, stable boat, as two rowers and a cox. You’ll focus on:
Getting in and out of the boat safely
Proper grip and hand positioning
Practicing the rowing stroke on water at a slow, steady pace
We’ll take it slow to ensure you feel stable, confident, and comfortable on the water.
Refine your technique, emphasizing timing and synchronization with your crew. This includes:
Learning to match your stroke with the rowers around you
Practicing the stroke sequence and blade work for clean, efficient rowing
Building endurance with longer rowing intervals
You’ll begin to feel the rhythm of rowing and start to experience the power of working in sync with your team.
Now that you’re comfortable with timing, we’ll work on adding controlled power to your stroke:
A focus on engaging your legs and core for a stronger stroke
Exercises to build endurance and cardiovascular fitness
Opportunities to try rowing in small boats, such as double sculls, for technique development
You’ll start to feel stronger and more coordinated as you gain confidence in applying power.
We usually finish off the program with a fun race.
By the end of the Learn to Row course you will have the skills, confidence, and readiness to row with our Novice Crew and explore more of the rowing at X-Press Boat Club.
